Canadian writer David Morrell created the Green Beret character "John Rambo". His novel was later adapted to the screen. Stallone starred in First Blood (1982) alongside Richard Crenna & Brian Dennehy. It was a spectacular success that divided audiences due to of its commentary about the Vietnam conflict, which is still relatively new in the American public's psyche. Whatever political viewpoints, Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) was immediately a success. The film received higher critical attention from many quarters because of its narrative about American MIAs getting detained in Vietnam. The movie's critics say that bad publicity is not feasible. "John Rambo"'s second adventure made a lot of money for Stallone which made him one of the most adored male actors in the 1980s. Stallone in the midst of a rise of popularity, called upon Rocky Balboa, his sparring rival, to return to his fight to protect the American patriotic spirit from an advancing Soviet threat. This was an Russian boxer called Ivan Drago played by Curt Dolph Lundgren. In spite of the level of violence in the fourth film being over the top, it became a source of debate to "Rocky" admirers. The brutality levels were higher than earlier Rocky films.
